Change Dial-up Settings To change your dialer settings, click on "My Computer", then the "Dial-Up Networking" folder. If you are starting a new account, click on "Make New Connection" then enter "Internet Adventure". Click on "Next". Find your local phone number for internet access and enter it. Click "Next" and "Finish". Highlight the Internet Adventure icon, click on "File", then "Properties". Click on "Server Types". Remove the checkmarks before "Log on to network", "NetBEUI" and "IPX/SPX". The only two checkmarks should be before: "Enable Software Compression" and "TCP/IP". Then click on "TCP/IP Settings". The options checked here should be: "Server Assigned IP Address" and "Server Assigned Name Server Addresses". Also place checkmarks before: "Use IP Header Compression" and "Use default Gateway On Remote Network". Then click on "OK" and "OK" to get back to the Dial-Up Networking window. If you need to reload your Dial-Up Networking, click on "Start", "Settings", Control Panel", "Add & Remove Programs", "Windows Setup", then remove the checkmark before "Communications". Click on "Apply" and restart your computer. Then, go through the above procedure again, and place a checkmark before "Communications", to reinstall your Dial-Up Networking. Click on "Apply" and restart your computer once more. Then check your settings again, for correct checkmarks. "What is Idle-Disconnect?" Idle-Disconnect means that if a computer is not using the Internet for a 20 minute period, it gets disconnected. Both your computer, as well as ours, can perform an Idle-Disconnect. If you are getting a warning that you will be disconnected in 30 seconds, that means it is your computer initiating the disconnect. Our system does not send a warning message. While our Idle-Disconnect takes all internet features in use into account, your computer browser Idle-Disconnect does not. This means that you can be disconnected from a chat room, for example, by your computer, but not by ours. You can turn off the Idle-Disconnect in Internet Explorer, by clicking on "Tools", "Internet Options", "Connections", "Settings", "Advanced", then remove the checkmark before "Disconnect if idle for 20 minutes". Note: Idle-Disconnect is not applicable to DSL users. "I am getting disconnected." If you are disconnected on a regular basis, and it is not caused by Idle-Disconnect, or incorrect Dial-Up Networking settings, you are having a hardware problem. This could either be caused by:
"I am only getting 28.8K connections." We are using all 56k X2 & V.90 US Robotics / 3COM modems. If you are not connecting above 28.8K or 33.6K, and you have a 56K modem, check for an update to V.90 for your modem. If that does not resolve the problem, then you might have a defective modem. Note: There are sections in the Frontier service territory (Wilton), that are known for not being able to achieve 56K. Call us at (916) 685-3200, during business hours, if this continues to be a problem. "What are acceptable connection rates?" To check your connection rate, double click on the two computers on the right side of the bottom task bar. Normal connection rates for 28.8 / 33.6 K modems are between 24K & 33.6K Normal connection rates for 56K modems are between 44K and 50K. If you are experiencing connection rates well below these, it could be caused by:
"What can I do to check were the problem lies?" A nice tool to trace internet response time is "TraceRt" or "trace route". Go to a DOS Prompt (or Command Prompt), and at the curser, type: tracert and the name of the site you wish to test. For example: tracert www.yahoo.com You will then see a result similar to this: Tracing route to www.yahoo.akadns.net [216.32.74.55] over a maximum of 30 hops:     1     136 ms     131 ms     131 ms     usr1.elkgrove.net [206.170.63.117]     2     133 ms     132 ms     130 ms     r1.elkgrove.net [206.170.63.65]     3     142 ms     137 ms     131 ms     206.171.148.1     4     133 ms     131 ms     131 ms     edge1-fa0-1-0.scrm01.pbi.net [216.102.176.227]     5     133 ms     116 ms     132 ms     sfra1sr1-3-0-0.ca.us.prserv.net [165.87.161.94]     6     139 ms     128 ms     129 ms     sfra1sr3-ge-2-0-0-0.ca.us.prserv.net [165.87.33.121]     7     131 ms     133 ms     131 ms     ibr03-p5-2.sntc03.exodus.net [209.185.249.245]     8     134 ms     127 ms     113 ms     bbr02-g4-1.sntc03.exodus.net [216.33.153.98]     9     224 ms     204 ms     201 ms     bbr01-p2-0.stng01.exodus.net [209.1.169.166]     10     388 ms     202 ms     196 ms     dcr04-g10-0.stng01.exodus.net [216.33.96.162]     11     228 ms     218 ms     207 ms     csr22-ve241.stng01.exodus.net [216.33.98.11]     12     209 ms           *           215 ms     216.35.210.122     13     211 ms     199 ms     203 ms     www.yahoo.akadns.net [216.32.74.55] Trace complete.
